Get Ready for the British Invasion -- Royal Air Force in Texas by the British Flying Training School Museum Fly-In
Terrell, TX (PRWEB) October 11, 2008 -- Get ready for the invasion of British pilots and vintage planes along with vintage military vehicles and antique cars. British fliers from in the WWII era British Flying Training School (BFTS) will attend a commemorative reunion on October 17th and 18th in Terrell, TX. The public is invited to enjoy the food, music, floor show, and camaraderie starting Friday, October 17th with a dinner dance from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the BFTS Museum, followed by a Saturday Fly-In, pancake breakfast, and Art Show starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Terrell Municipal Airport.
"This is going to be a fabulous event," said City of Terrell Assistant City Manager Mike Sims. "The Friday night dinner and dance with the Dave Washburn Jazz band, the dance troop Class Act, dinner catered by Eddie Dean with a cash bar, is going to be great!" he enthused.
The Friday evening event will have a jet set start with the Spitfire plane parked just outside the seating area followed by a cocktail reception with British pilots, US pilots, and dignitaries. Dinner will be catered by Eddie Dean after which the entertainment will begin.
The romantic stories of the young cadets and local girls will be recounted by Jean Ann Ables-Flatt in a rendition with Peggy Bass Holton. Their reminiscence will occur between dance sets by Class Act, a troop of dancers loved by audiences everywhere. Dave Washburn will provide the live jazz band music with WWII era music played between sets during band breaks. So dust off your jitter-bug and lindy and swing into the event to enjoy the favorite tunes of yesteryear.
At 7:30 a.m. the BFTS Museum and Terrell Municipal Airport will come alive with the soulful sound of bagpipes greeting the dawn and the buzz of planes, experimental aircraft, vintage cars, and military vehicles. The public, pilots, artists, and enthusiasts will enjoy a pancake breakfast hosted by Carl Brown of the Experimental Aircraft Association featuring all you can eat pancakes with grilled sausage, coffee and juice.
The morning will also see artists arrive with blank canvases to paint their choice of planes, antique cars, military vehicles, or artifacts in the museum. With limited time, the artist will challenge themselves to complete paintings before the 1pm judging. This style of painting is known as 'plein air' and will be hosted by the North East Texas Fine Arts Alliance (NETFAA).
About noon the 8th Air Force will do a 'Fly-Over' and the Marines will post the colors. This ceremony will be accompanied by the acclaimed South West Christian College Choral. The Mayor will issue a proclamation, there will be a brief address, then the Commemorative Air Force, skydivers and other aerobatics will begin.
The WWII British Flying Training School Reunion Dinner on Friday is being held to honor the British pilots who trained in the United States and the American officers and civilian staff who assisted with that training. Over 2,000 young men passed through the training facility staffed by American men and women who taught the cadets to effectively fly a war plane using simulators and planes that will be on display along with other period artifacts.
Tom Killebrew, author of the book, "The Royal Air Force in Texas", recounting the history of the BFTS and the people who served there, will also lecture and sign books. Taps and Last Post will be heralded by a trumpeter as the US and UK flags are lowered at 4 p.m., concluding the event.
Tickets to the Dinner are $30 and tickets can be purchased either online or at Terrell Marketing Center.
Admission to Saturday's Fly-In is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 5 - 16. Small children and military and their families (with military ID) admitted free. For more information call (927) 524-4322 or go to the website: British Flying Training School Museum (http://www.BFTSTexas.com)
